2008 Senior Nutrition Task Force

Background

Minnesota's Senior Nutrition Program supports the statewide provision of nutrition services to adults age 60 and older through intrastate allocations of federal and state funding. These services currently include home delivered meals, congregate dining, nutrition education and counseling. Since the establishment of the Nutrition Program, many societal and economic changes have taken place that create the need for adjustments to the program. Key aspects of these adjustments include service and targeting priorities and their implications for procurement and contracting.

Charge

The policies of the Senior Nutrition Program should be brought into alignment with the revised State Plan on Aging (FFY2009-2012). The forces shaping the nutrition needs and preferences of current and future older adults, as well as the impact on the Senior Nutrition Program, must be reviewed. The current focus on at-risk, frail individuals needs to be analyzed in conjunction with the need to either deliver food to frail persons or to transport the people to the food. To provide this review and address the societal and economic changes, a Nutrition Task Force composed of Board members, representatives of Area Agencies on Aging, providers and consumers from diverse areas was established. The Task Force will recommend to the Minnesota Board on Aging (MBA) the service and targeting priorities and any policy changes that may be needed.

Expected Outcomes

  1. Updated Senior Nutrition Priorities and Directions, 2009-2012.
  2. Recommendation report to the Board.
  3. Completion of the Senior Nutrition Study.

Membership
